Cannabis sativa is an annual herbaceous flowering plant originating in ancient eastern Asia. Due to its various uses such as industrial fiber, seed oil, food, recreation, and medicine, today Cannabis sativa is cultivated all over the world. This plant also has a nickname of Mexican origin, “marijuana”.
Good quality marijuana seeds are available all over the world for medical and recreational consumption. There are several types of such seeds such as white rhino seeds, strawberry kush strain seeds, blueberry seeds etc.
Cannabidiol is one of the main components of Cannabis sativa and plays a major role in balancing the euphoric, mind-altering effects of the equally prominent component of marijuana, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Over the years, CBD oil or Cannabis oil rich in CBD is gaining popularity as a non-psychoactive medical treatment for several ailments.
A Brief Timeline on the History of CBD
This timeline covers things like when CBD was discovered, when some of the major research/ scientific/ legal milestones related to it took place and the present situation in terms of its legality and clinical research.
CBD Oil In 1940
Roger Adams isolates CBD from the rest of Cannabis sativa plant. A Harvard alumni and a prominent organic chemist at the University of Illinois, Roger Adams spent several years of his career on the research of the chemistry of marijuana.
During this research work, he happened to isolate CBD chemical compound from the rest of the marijuana plant, not knowing exactly what he had found. Hence at that time, the chemical composition of CBD remained unknown.
CBD Oil In 1946
Dr. Walter S. Loewe conducts the first CBD tests on lab animals. Shortly after Dr. Adam’s accidental discovery of CBD, a scientist called Walter S. Loewe began testing it on lab animals, particularly rabbits and mice.
His results showed that CBD produced no observable effects on the behavior of these animals. As such, these were the first laboratory indications that CBD lacks any sort of psychoactive effect.
However, the chemical structures of the cannabinoids or compounds of Cannabis had not yet been defined. So the test results were still vague in terms of which compound was responsible for producing which reaction.
CBD Oil In 1964
Raphael Mechoulam describes the chemical structure of CBD. An Israeli scientist, Dr. Raphael identified CBD’s chemical structure in his laboratory at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem back in 1964.
Mechoulam is considered as the godfather of modern Cannabis because without his discoveries, we would have no idea that CBD is a non-intoxicating compound with countless medicinal benefits.
CBD Oil In The Mid 1970’s (And 1978)
An alcoholic extract of cannabis is released for medicinal use by the British Pharmacopoeia. As soon as the non-intoxicating characteristics of CBD compound were identified, talks began about the use of marijuana plant as a potential medicine.
In the mid-1970’s, the British Pharmacopoeia, a publication of quality standards for medicinal substances in the UK released a licensed alcoholic extract of cannabis for therapeutic use.
In 1978, New Mexico becomes the first U.S. state to legally acknowledge Cannabis sativa plant as a medicine. This legislation was a landmark approval in the United States because it represented the first instance of a cannabis compound being legally recognized for the medicinal potential, thanks to the discovery of medicinal properties of CBD.
CBD Oil In The 80’s, 90’s, & Early 2000’s
In February of 1980, Raphael Mechoulam works with South American researchers to publish a study on Cannabis and epilepsy. Dr. Mechoulam, together with research scientists from Brazil conducted a study on 16 individuals that suffered from severe epilepsy.
Many of these individuals were children. The study showed that whoever received CBD experienced an improved condition, with barely any side effects.
In 1996 California becomes the first U.S. state to legalize medical marijuana. California’s decision to legalize marijuana in 1996 led the first medical marijuana dispensary to open on U.S. soil. This remarkable development quickly paved the way for other states to follow.
In the state of Florida, a medical marijuana dispensary is known as a medical marijuana treatment center, and it is responsible for cultivating and processing the cannabis.
On October 7, 2003 the United States government patents CBD as a neuroprotectant. Due to the proven neuroprotective characteristics of CBD-rich cannabis products such as CBD oil, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services was issued a patent on CBD for its use as a neuroprotectant therapy.
CBD Oil In Modern Times
In 2017, steps initiated for potential FDA approval of CBD as a medicine. Important steps were taken in 2017 for CBD to obtain federal acknowledgment. Approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would allow physicians across the United States to prescribe the drug.
Today, in the US, recreational cannabis (marijuana) is legal in nine states and medical marijuana is legal in twenty-nine states. CBD oil in Florida is particularly popular.
