FOXBOROUGH – Because it’s Rob Gronkowski, the former Patriots star’s appearance to announce and promote the CBD Medic’s partnership with Gillette Stadium and Patriot Place, became partially about whether the tight end might someday return to the NFL.

Gronkowski himself even teased the possibility to help promote the product.

“I’m using CBD Medic products for my recover he said in his opening statement. I don’t want to be banned from playing the sport I love because I’m using a product I can buy or anyone can buy at a pharmacy right off the shelf,” Gronkowski said. “I want to have the option to get back into the game. If I’m banned next year, I can’t. You all want to see me out there. You know you do.”

When pressed during the question and answer session, Gronkowski said he’s ‘at peace with his decision to retire.

“I love where I’m at,” he said but he likes keeping his options open.

Gronkowski was asked if the NFL refusing to release its ban on cannabis products would preclude him from ever returning. He said it would be hard for him to be both an NFL player and a promoter of a banned substance. But he said the ban doesn’t necessarily prevent players from using CBD because it doesn’t cause them to fail a drug test.

“I’m pretty sure you can still use it as a player. That I’m representing it part is what would come into play,” said Gronkowski. “You don’t fail a drug test. There’s no THC in it. You can still use it on the low.”

Because cannabis products are banned by the NFL, signage inside the stadium is not an option, but CBD Medic purchased a billboard showing Gronkowski’s image outside the stadium and the company’s logo and slogan will appear on the water tower adjacent to the stadium.

“Any type of extract from cannabis is not allowed within the stadium,” said Parry Antelman, the CEO of Abacus. “We are not allowed to be within the stadium. We need to be outside the stadium, peripheral areas of the stadium. Signs just outside the stadium.”

Antelman said free samples of the product, which he stressed is legal over the counter in all 50 states, would be given to Patriots fans “at every game.”

Antelman thought it was inevitable that the league would eventually make CBD products permissible.

“This is up to the NFL. I know they are working and studying alternative medications to help the athletes,” he said. “Whether it’s six months, nine months, 12 months or 18 months. We hope we’ll be one of the first to be inside the stadium.”

Antelman said he wants to use the increased exposure to educate people on CBD pointing out that CBD is from hemp and that hemp is not pot.

The FDA hasn’t approved any products with CBD and according to its website it has some concerns and it still studying. Most of the concerns appear related to ingestable products. CBD Medic is a topical product.
